INTRODUCTION
What is beta glucan?
Beta glucan is a fibrous polysaccharide (complex sugar) that exists in a variety of different food sources, including yeast, oat bran, barley fiber, medicinal mushrooms (such as Tricholoma and Ganoderma lucidum), and seaweed. But not all beta glucan is the same. Some studies have shown that yeast beta glucan has the best overall benefit for immune health.

Yeast beta glucan, especially Saccharomyces cerevisiae, are composed of a long beta-glucan core and other lengths are very precise beta-glucan branched chain（beta- 1,3-glucan and beta- 1,6 glucan). Mushrooms such as dancing mushrooms also contain side chain beta-glucan（beta- 1,3-glucan and beta- 1,6 glucan), but these side chains are much shorter than those of yeast. In oats, barley and rye beta glucan has: beta- 1,3-glucan and beta- 1,4-glucan linear chain.

These simpler Beta-Glucan forms, which show great efficacy of dietary fiber and cholesterol reduction, but it has no immune enhancement effect like yeast glucan.

Benefits to the immune system
On the surface of our leukocytes, there is a receptor site for yeast Bata glucan. Just as the lock on the door can only be opened with the correct key, these receptor positions are particularly consistent with the structural composition of beta glucan. When yeast beta glucan binds to the receptor, it activates white blood cells in a very specific manner to help resist invading organisms. The following are the specific effects of yeast Beta Glucan on the immune system:

1.Increase the level of secreted immunoglobulin A (IGA). This protective substance is distributed on the mucous membrane of our body, such as the nose, throat, airway, gastrointestinal tract, vagina and urethra. Low levels of secretory IgA are associated with an increased risk of infection.
2.Activate macrophages. This is a special type of white blood cell, which is located in specific tissues, such as mucosa, liver, spleen and lymph nodes. Macrophages perform two important functions. They act as garbage collectors and are responsible for swallowing foreign matter, including bacteria and cell debris. During this process, macrophages will analyze the threat to the immune system and send chemical information to other white blood cells when necessary to enhance the response. 3.Activate monocytes. Monocytes are macrophages (garbage collectors), which circulate in the blood and perform the same functions, including being responsible for triggering multiple immune responses.
4.Activate neutrophils. These cells also act as garbage collectors, actively phagocytizing and destroying bacteria, tumor cells and dead particles. Neutrophils are particularly important in preventing bacterial infections.

5. Enhance natural killer (NK) cells. These cells are so named because they can destroy cells that have become cancer cells or have been infected by viruses. In chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer and chronic viral infection, the activity level of natural killer cells is usually low.
